CRY WOLF by Marjorie Carleton

THE CLASSIC WWII ROMANTIC THRILLER, MADE INTO THE 1940s FILM NOIR MASTERPIECE STARRING BARBARA STANWYCK AND ERROL FLYNN!

"One of the 25 top female crime writers of the past 50 years." —Mystery Tribune

After learning her husband is dead, Sandra Marshall visits his remote family estate to claim her inheritance. There, Sandra faces a cold reception from her husband's uncle, research scientist Mark Caldwell, who is also the administrator of his rather large inheritance. For some reason her husband had never told his uncle about their wedding and he accuses Sandra of lying about the marriage, but allows her to stay until he can verify her story.

However, her husband's teenage niece, Julie, welcomes Sandra with open arms. But soon tells Sandra that Mark is holding her prisoner and that strange things are going on in the sealed-off area of the mansion where he does his research. Julie also implies the other family members and servants are not telling the truth about the circumstances of Sandra's husband's death. Mark defends himself by saying Julie has an overactive imagination, leaving Sandra to wonder who and what she can believe. Sandra determines to find out for herself. Not realizing that in doing so she will become marked for murder by one of the most brilliant and scheming intellects she has ever encountered.

"…Carleton’s main character, Sandra, is ingenious, resourceful, and intrepid: sneaking into a mysterious, locked laboratory building via a dumb waiter in the dark of night; swinging into a hidden room through a broken skylight; scaling a formidably tall, mesh fence by dragging over a heavy tree limb, propping it against the fence, then climbing up to drop down the other side; amongst other feats. Even when she catches herself getting a little sappy over the male lead, who may or may not be the villain of the piece, she has the good sense to poke fun at herself. …Cry Wolf is … a good read … with lots of plot and character twists. … The male lead shows some genuine humor, compassion, and vulnerability while playing the manly man." —Sharon Healy-Yang, the Jessica Minton Mysteries

"When Sandra utters the words, 'I am your nephew's widow,' to the uncle who didn't know of her existence until she came to the funeral, she steps into an experience that changes the lives of four people. Here is a mystery so readable it seems to run under your eyes, and before you know it you are so involved in Sandra's strange predicament (loving a suspected murderer, hunting for a husband who is not a husband and who is supposed to be dead but may not be) that you may find yourself in a cold sweat. In the midst of mounting danger, in an out of the way estate where a sealed chemical laboratory may hide more than war secrets, Sandra sticks it out to discover not only the answer to all the dreadful puzzles but love as well. The final denouement only leads to an even more ghastly situation, and you may not sleep the rest of the night. Mrs. Carleton creates suspense in such rapid action that you don't have time to figure the angles ... in fact you don't have time to do anything except shudder and read. Suave, out of the ordinary … positively chill infested … The characters sparkle … it will scare you." —The Indianapolis Star

"The plot has pace; the manse is traditionally eerie, the heroine is charming." —The New York Times
